Borbecker Strasse secondary school and sports hall
A new school building with a sports hall for the newly founded Borbecker Strasse municipal secondary school has been built on the Borbecker Strasse site in Düsseldorf Rath, directly on the A52 freeway feeder road.
The entire Borbecker Strasse secondary school project comprises the three-storey school building with classrooms for approx. 540 pupils in a cluster arrangement, extracurricular areas for all-day schooling and inclusion, specialist classes, administration area, assembly hall and break hall, canteen and a double sports hall for school and club use with changing rooms and equipment rooms. In addition, the outdoor area and the landscaped schoolyard and play areas have been created across the entire site, as well as a janitor's apartment.
The school building consists of five cubes, which are distinguished primarily by their façades and different uses. Cube 1 with its industrial glass façade forms the "heart" of the building. Synergies between the open recreation and learning areas are created across all three floors. The directly adjacent cubes 2 and 5 have a light-colored brick façade and contain the specialist classes and the administration. Cubes 3 and 4 with a dark brick façade at the front contain the six transparently designed home areas with teaching and differentiation rooms arranged around individual multi-purpose areas as well as teacher workrooms, sanitary facilities and checkrooms. The clusters have access to the schoolyard via a directly adjacent staircase.
The double sports hall is an independent building with separate access for school and club use. It is divided into a high hall section and a lower side wing with an adjoining janitor's apartment.
A sustainable and efficient energy concept was implemented in the secondary school, including the use of a hybrid heating system with "intelligent" heat pumps, the utilization of the entire sports hall roof for the operation of a large-scale photovoltaic system as well as extensive and intensive greening of roof areas.
