Kappeler Straße Neighborhood Development
As part of the “Benrather Rochade” project, the Städtische Schloß-Gymnasium and the Städtische Realschule Benrath are relocating from Wimpfener Straße to Benrodestraße and Marbacher Straße, respectively. In addition to the school campus—which includes a four-court sports hall—two residential complexes are also planned for this new location. Since new residential development is also planned for the Wimpfener Straße site, the Spektakulum Youth Center will be relocated to Kappeler Straße, on the district border between Benrath and Reisholz. The new Düsseldorf-Benrath Ice Arena has already been built at Kappeler Straße 107 and began operations in September 2021. Thus, with the Spektakulum and the Ice Arena, a new, supraregional center for sports and recreation is taking shape on Kappeler Straße.
The construction of the new Spektakulum on Kappeler Straße in Düsseldorf-Benrath will create a modern and sustainable hub for youth culture, creativity, and social interaction. This provides the youth cultural institution of the state capital of Düsseldorf with a new location, as its previous premises in the former Benrath school complex will eventually make way for residential development.
At the heart of the design is a multifunctional event building featuring a flexible hall for concerts, readings, comedy, theater, and other cultural events. The space is complemented by a foyer, a dining area, backstage areas, offices, and event rooms. The distinctive architecture and the identity-defining façade design create a high level of recognizability and make the building a new cultural attraction in southern Düsseldorf.
Special emphasis is placed on sustainability and future-proofing: extensive green roofing, photovoltaic systems, an air-to-water heat pump, and the use of resource-efficient materials form the basis for an energy-efficient building aiming for DGNB Gold certification. The outdoor facilities also enhance the quality of the space and foster youth culture—including graffiti walls, green spaces, calisthenics areas, and bicycle parking.
The new Spektakulum combines culture, sustainability, and social participation, creating a vibrant space for young people in Düsseldorf.
Two additional lots are still available for other uses along the newly created connecting street between Kappeler Straße and Paul-Thomas-Straße.
